The sun’s out and the weather is fine for backcountry hiking. Why don’t you bring your little one along in one of those sturdy baby carrier backpacks and let her enjoy the outdoors while you have fun too?

A Parent’s Backcountry Hiking Challenge

Backcountry hiking is a nice way to enjoy the summer and it’s an adventure the whole family will enjoy. With young children in tow, you have to slow your pace and take snack breaks in-between and if you have to take your five or six month old along, forget the front baby carrier because your child is now too heavy for long-distance travel that way; you’ll likely suffer back pain.

With a buggy, it will be difficult to maneuver the slips and slopes along the trails. Instead of enjoying the scenery you will be spending time balancing the buggy and checking the baby after each sudden twist, turn, and thump. What a damper. One of those child carrier backpacks will make your life easier on the backcountry trails.

The Solution

Baby carrier backpacks make parents’ backcountry hiking easier and your child can get a good view of the scenery; these backpacks are recommended for kids five- to six-months-old or older because they need to have strong enough neck muscles and the ability to sit up, pretty as you please, to get a good view of the countryside. It is a different experience alright when baby sees an adult view of the world, instead of the view of knees and shrubs they get from buggy rides.

For hiking or a leisurely stroll in the park, or even a walk about town, you do not want to be encumbered with the buggy or stroller. Once your child can sit up on her own, you need a versatile baby carrier backpack, in which your child can sit comfortably, and keep your hands free. These sturdier carriers do not sacrifice anything when it comes to comfort for both parent and child, especially for longer walks.

More Advantages

Some soft baby carriers are designed for longer use, but can still be uncomfortable. Rigid framed backpack carriers assure your baby’s security and comfort and are outfitted to make hiking a pleasure. Some varieties of backpack carriers can be transformed to a chair. It boasts good suspension, padded shoulder straps with on the fly adjustment points, and a padded waist belt. The waist belt is significant because you support the weight with your hips and legs not your shoulders.

You should be able to find many useful features such as pockets where you can pop in baby stuff, water proofed sun and rain guards to protect your child in case there’s a change in the weather, high backs and sides to shield his from branches and twigs, stirrups to keep his feet comfortable not hanging, a safety harness, and lashings for extra gear.

A collapsible frame for compact storage also works as a retractable kickstand to hold the carrier upright while on the ground, even with baby inside. Select one with toy loops; your child can grab these anytime or amuse himself with the bouncing toys while you trek the trails. Some of these backpacks come with a detachable bag for necessities – wipes, diapers and change of clothing during the hike. You can easily sneak in a candy bar for yourself.

With your hands free and your little one settled comfortably inside a baby carrier backpack, you and he will immensely enjoy your backcountry hiking, excursions to the mall and those strolls around the neighborhood.

There are a variety of baby carriers out there – ranging from simple to complicated. All of them offer a wide range of fabrics, colors and patterns. Carriers are usually broken down into categories depending on the amount of hardware used. Some have rings, straps, or latches. Others use just the length of the fabric and strength of the wrapping to create a lot of comfort and versatility. Soft carries, slings, pouches and hip carriers are the most common categories.

The Moby wrap is known as the simplest and most comfortable 5.5 meters of fabric you’ll ever carry a baby in. A Moby, as they are known, is available in a variety of colors that are excellent at repelling stains and supporting a child up to 35 lbs in weight. Moby also makes a line of socks called Baby Legs that are designed to match or compliment your Moby wrap.

The Moby is also known as the most versatile baby wrap on the market – offering nine possible ways of tying the Moby to facilitate different holds. All Mobys come with detailed instructions and on the Internet there is a tutorial video you can watch that will help you learn how to get the most of your Moby.

‘Mei tei’ is another popular style that is also referred to as being an Asian style carrier that offers front, back or hip carries with a padded shoulder and waist straps. They are one-size-fits-all and suitable for use with kids up to 35 pounds. They are also reversible to a solid color so mom, dad, or any caregiver can feel comfortable using it.

ERGO is a kind of soft carrier that is highly structured so not as versatile, meaning you only have the option of baby facing out or baby facing in.

Two popular sling styles are the Maya and the Ellaroo. The Maya has a padded shoulder and uses a large ring that you thread the material through to create a style well suited for discreet breastfeeding. The Maya even has a model of sling where you don’t have to rethread it after changing a diaper. The Maya is woven cotton and the Ellaroo is organic non-woven cotton. Both have padded shoulders and Ellaroo has padded rails. In reviews, the Maya is preferred and considered to be the superior product, though trying any baby carrier is the only way to know if it works for you or not.

The best way to figure out what kind of wrap, sling, pouch, soft carrier, etc. will be best for you is to figure out which way is most comfortable for you wear your baby, then look for comparison charts that graph the versatility or lack thereof of many different brands.

For parents who love to spend time meaningfully yet stay close to their baby, front baby carriers are an excellent choice. The best part of using front baby carriers is that you can use it even for one month old babies. It is totally safe because your baby’s head would be supported by a secure and padded headrest. In case your baby is older, the headrest can be folded away.

So, investing in good quality front baby carriers is a great choice for parents who want to enjoy safety and proximity with their little one.

Features of Front Baby Carriers

Front baby carriers are usually made from either a cotton or nylon fabric seat with holes cut in the bottom to accommodate a baby’s legs. There are built-in straps to hook around both shoulders. These front baby carriers have a firm structure and an ergonomic design which helps to distribute a baby’s weight evenly.

An added advantage is that these carriers make it easier for parents to carry a child for longer periods.

Buying Front Baby Carriers

Front baby carriers are not easy to choose as a few basic points need to be kept in mind before making a purchase. Here are some relevant points to consider while buying a front baby carrier:

Wear the carrier once to check whether it is comfortable or not.
Check the softness of the cloth from which it has been made. Rough or coarse fabric may cause discomfort to the baby.

Check whether it can be worn easily without help from others.
Check whether the fabric is washable.
Check whether removable seats are there or not.
Check for padding as it generally keeps the baby warm.
Avoid bulky padding as it makes it difficult to carry a baby.
Check if the carrier can be adjusted according to the size of the user/caregiver.
Check if waists belts are provided as it lets a parent remain active and stress-free.
Check whether the carrier has a removable seat or not. It is very useful when the baby falls asleep in the carrier and can be laid down for a nap.

Attached to Baby is the most trusted name in perfect baby carriers and offers a wide variety of slings, carriers, wraps and baby wearing accessories.

Attached to Baby specializes in front baby carriers, slings and baby wearing accessories.
Whether you are going for a hike, a day at the park, or just a trip to the mall, baby backpack carriers provide the extra padded comfort, support and storage space to make your trips more enjoyable. Baby backpacks are also more durable than most other baby carriers.

The Basics:

Baby Backpack carriers are best suited for children over six months who have steady head and neck control and the confidence to sit relatively unsupported. Your child can weigh up to about 45lbs. That is probably all your back can handle as well.

The backpacks are framed with either a lightweight metal or plastic, similar to a regular backpack you would wear hiking or camping. They come with either a three point or five point harness for your child’s safety. They are also made with a breathable and washable fabric that comes in a variety of colors.

Many include include a weather canopy, storage compartments, toy loops, key chains, water bottle holders and more.

Things To Consider

You want your backpack to be very generously padded for comfort. Adjustable so it may fit more than one adult, who may be carrying the child. Consider whether or not you want your child to have a foot rest or have open footing. Does it come with a stand, that will make it easier to put on by yourself Make sure the adult height, waist, and torso ranges will fit the person who will wear it. They do vary. Check out the “extras”. Each manufacture and model have different amenities that will appeal to different people and don’t forget style. You have to look good wearing it don’t you?

I have heard that baby front carriers are best for young babies but they look rather flimsy to me! Surely your baby would fall out? And how on earth do parents cope with a front sling. My husband would look great wearing one of those lol.

Any advice you could give me would be appreciated and I can’t wait to try a carrier out! Like most mothers I want to make the best possible choice and avoid the mistakes others have made.

The Most Essential Baby NEED (after bottles/breasts and diapers, of course)

Having had seven daughters and owned a childcare center for seven years, I have experienced a lot of equipment and accessories intended to make caring for babies just a little easier. If I had to do it all over again and was told I could only have one piece of baby equipment, without hesitation, I would choose a baby sling. I did not own a sling for my first three children. In fact, I never even heard of them outside of maybe seeing a picture of women in third world countries using them to strap their babies to them. Something significant happened during the seven years between the births of my third and fourth child: the rise in popularity of the internet. With the internet came the easy exchange of ideas. With that, the good word about baby slings spread like wildfire.

There are other hands free ways to hold your baby that I had tried; primarily front baby carriers and baby backpacks. Some people really like these options, and they may be perfect for you, so let’s take a look at some of their features.

There are many brands of baby front carriers with slightly different features. Graco and Baby Bjorn are two of the more popular brands. With these carriers, two padded shoulder straps go over your shoulders and criss-cross your back. The straps adjust to accommodate different sizes and shapes that men and women tend to be. The baby is then slid into a supportive pocket with leg holes. The baby’s final position is against the chest with the feet dangling. As the baby grows and gets stronger, many carriers allow the baby to face outward. The things I did not like about the front carrier is that it seemed awkward to me. If the baby fell asleep while in the carrier, it was difficult to gently remove her to lay her down in the crib. Also, because the baby was in the front, she was in the way both physically and visually, making the accomplishments of such tasks as sewing, meal preparation, cleaning, caring for older children, et cetera more difficult.

Another option is a baby backpack, which is stood on the frame in order to insert the child. Then the frame is lifted and slid onto the back of the adult. I found that the baby got heavy quickly with this method. Also, I didn’t like the fact that I had no visual contact with the baby while she was on my back. Another problem that I had was that I couldn’t just sit down and take a rest without having to first remove the backpack. I personally didn’t like the functionality of the backpack for times when the baby fell asleep. Additionally, it was rather bulky and took up quite a bit of space when it was not in use.

Nine years ago, after the birth of my fourth daughter, I was finally introduced to … cue up the Halleluah chorus … A BABY SLING!!! There are several kinds; my preferred sling style was a long piece of fabric that fed through two metal fastening rings, leaving a “tail” of fabric. My absolute favorite was the Maya Wrap with a pocket sewn into the tail, which I used to carry a couple extra diapers and wipes, and often my car keys and wallet! With this style baby sling, I could carry the baby high or low, on the front, side, or back, facing forward or facing me, and lying down or sitting up. I was also able to breast feed in a discreet, usually hands free manner, covering any accidental exposure with the tailpiece of the sling, which easily went over my shoulder. As the baby grew, the sling easily adjusted to accommodate her changing comfort preferences. If the baby fell asleep, the sling easily slipped over my shoulders and allowed me to keep the baby nestled in the sling as I gently laid her in her crib. Up until my children were about four or five years old, I was able to continuously use my sling for hands free carrying. As a child care center owner, there were many times where I was able to put two children comfortably in one sling allowing me to still use my hands for other things. I frequently used the sling to hold and bottle-feed infant twins.

The biggest disadvantage with a sling is that, for some people, they take some getting used to. Some people practice with a small dog or life sized baby doll. It is best to look at videos or pictures of how others are using them to get ideas. It may take a little time, but I personally feel it is well worth the adjustment period.

As you can see, I am a bit biased toward slings, but the other hands free baby carriers might be absolutely perfect for your needs. Look at all options and try a few out. Whichever you choose, you will be a happier, more productive new parent as you learn to incorporate the joy of nurturing your newborn with the other long list of tasks that you have.

You love your baby so much that you always want to bring and carry him or her around with you. But you have to admit that your arms may get tired and weak from carrying your baby over an extended period of time. Then you have your schedules to adhere to and chores to accomplish that would keep any parent busy. Baby carriers are useful for any busy parent. With the baby carrier you still get to carry your baby while at the same time keeping your hands full with the tasks you have at hand.

There are a lot of baby Carrier Backpack styles to choose from in the market. We have the front pack carriers that are adjustable and suitable for a parent of any height or size. This has a weight limit of between 20-25 pounds. Here, your baby will be facing towards you. Some of the current front pack carriers can adjust to a back-pack carrier.

You can also find a back-pack carrier. This has a weight limit of 40 pounds. Your baby here will be leaning on your back. There is just a disadvantage to this type of carrier with regards to the inconvenience it offers in getting the baby in and out of the carrier.

Sling baby carriers come in a variety of fabrics and styles. They have the unpadded and padded kind as well. Sling carriers carry babies on the hips, in a cradle hold and snuggle hold as well. There is so much that you can do with a sling baby carrier that it can even be used to carry baby on the back. The convenience these sling carriers provide is that you can easily store them in your diaper bags.

Then, there are the Asian style baby carriers where long strips of cloth are attached to a carrier (usually a quilted fabric rectangular in shape). These can be used either at the front or at the back. This is ideal for newborns and smaller babies, for toddlers will find this to be limiting in space.

You should choose a baby carrier that you are most comfortable with and one that will suit your lifestyle. Irregardless of which particular one you choose, for me the important thing is that despite your busy schedule you maintain some physical contact with your baby which is very important. Even just a small amount of touch is enough to let your baby feel your love and care.
